“Can I see your passport?” I asked Luis when we got home. I had to get to the bottom of this, and I had an idea.

He handed me a little blue book. The Guatemalan passport had a beautiful quetzal on the cover. The quetzal is the country’s national bird and their money’s name! I flipped to the page with Luis’s picture and couldn’t help giggling at his goofy grin and sticking-up hair. Then I saw a page that looked different from the others.

“What is this?” I asked, but Luis didn’t know.

I went to the kitchen to ask Mama.

“That’s a visa. It’s a government-issued permit to enter a country,” she explained.

“I knew it! Thanks, Mama!” I said and skipped back to Luis to return his passport.

“Now I know why the Mouse has not visited me!” I said proudly.

“Why?” Luis asked.

“The Mouse doesn’t have a passport,” I continued. “I have never heard of visas for mice!”

Luis shrugged. “And maybe that’s why the Tooth Fairy never comes to Guatemala? She doesn’t have one either?”

We had no choice but to leave a tooth as bait to see who would come. Would el Ratón get a special visa to bring Luis his quetzal in Texas?
